about

There has been many songs written about North Carolina, having grown up in NC Alicia Best decided to try her hand at a 'Carolina Song' when she was abroad in the UK during a protest that took place in her hometown Durham NC. The protestors gathered in front of the old courthouse and toppled the Confederate statue that had been erected in the 1920s right outside. As a friend aptly pointed out "The Courthouse is a place where people go to seek justice. How can you trust that you will get justice, as a person of color, if there is a glorified statue of the rebel army right outside the door looking down on you." In this song Alicia says "Change can't come too soon", although she grew up in NC at a time where many changes have happened in her lifetime, she hopes that the changes the south continues to make move towards deconstructing the racism that the south was built on.

lyrics

I hear they put a new light up at the Kraken on 54
I’m back in North Carolina but it don’t feel like home
I don’t wanna be living in the past, it seems the past it catching up

They say times are a changin’
They say time heals all wounds
But I’ve got these ghosts and change can’t come
Too soon, Carolina, come too soon

They built up the city skyline but we’re not learning
It wasn’t long ago we saw the crosses burning
Sure I wanna say that we’ve come a long way but we’ve got a lot of catching up

They say times are a changin’
They say time heals all wounds
But I’ve got these ghosts and change can’t come
Too soon, Carolina, come too soon

Just like James I hear the highway calling me, I know I’m already gone
It never sounds as sweet when I sing your Carolina song
Oh Carolina, oh oh

They pulled down the statue but its pillar remains
Haunting the courthouse it still says ‘to our boys in grey’
You say it’s history but sure seems to me history is catching up

They say times are a changin’
They say time heals all wounds
But I’ve got these ghosts and change can’t come
Too soon, Carolina, come too soon

Oh Carolina
Oh Carolina, come too soon
