about

A potter's field is a place where unidentified bodies are buried. Prostitutes, vagrants, drifters, loners, people who died in poverty, people who died far away from anyone they knew, or even murder victims would end up in a graves without a name. This haunting folk ballad is the first single from ‘On A Whim’, the debut album by British Americana act ‘A Different Thread’.

lyrics

They don’t know I came to town in my wedding dress
My shoes were shined, I tried my very best
He took my name and he gave me his
But I’d rather none than a name like this

Lay me in a shallow grave
Wrap me in a linen shroud
I would settle for a stone without a name
Out in the potter’s field
I would settle for a stone without a name

I never spoke about the silk and the satin too
That he gave to me to hide the black and blue
But in the dead of night and behind closed doors
His rage was never satisfied with more

Lay me in a shallow grave
Wrap me in a linen shroud
I would settle for a stone without a name
Out in the potter’s field
I would settle for a stone without a name

You should’ve seen me on the night I left
Bare feet on the floor and part way dressed
But it starts in the fingers and it moves from there
A frozen girl on the old church stairs

Lay me in a shallow grave
Wrap me in a linen shroud
I would settle for a stone without a name
Out in the potter’s field
I would settle for a stone without a name

Well the prettiest thing I’ve seen since I left the farm
Was the frost shining in the morning sun
And the care with which the old man lay me down
As if he’d lost a daughter of his own

Lay me in a shallow grave
Wrap me in a linen shroud
I would settle for a stone without a name
Out in the potter’s field
I would settle for a stone without a name
